WV11.co.uk is an award-winning website dedicated to community news and events in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton.

My husband James and I founded the ‘hyperlocal’ website in July 2009 as we felt that there was a lot going on in our local community that remained under the radar of the traditional local press.

We also felt more of than not, only the bad news was reported and we wanted to create somewhere that we could talk about the positive news in the area as well; somewhere online for local residents to come and talk about everything going on in their area, both good and bad.

The site has gone from strength to strength, we have enjoyed support from organisations such as Wolverhampton City Council, West Midlands Police, Wolverhampton Homes and numerous community groups and organisations. In October 2011, we were given a ‘Pride of Wolverhampton’ award by local radio station The Wolf FM in recognition of our voluntary work on the website. In June 2013 we hit 5,000 followers on our Facebook page.

WV11 was my first real experience of volunteer work and I’ve found it hugely rewarding. Both James and I have met some wonderful people in our local community and further afield and through WV11 have become involved in numerous other voluntary projects in Wednesfield and Wolverhampton.
